Abstract

The interplay between electrical power and computing power is more important than ever in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and edge computing, as data centres are becoming controllable electrical loads. The results of this survey are presented on various aspects of grid-interactive, carbon-aware coordination of electricity and computing resources over the last ten years, including multi-energy data centers, edge-cloud scheduling, computing-power networks, workload shifting, and demand response. Studies are included only if they coordinate computation with at least one electrical factor, such as price, carbon intensity, grid constraints, renewables, cooling, or storage. To differentiate market coupling, carbon-aware dispatching, networked compute orchestration, local energy assets, and metrics, a five-layer taxonomy has been proposed. For practical implementation, the key prerequisites are latency-guaranteed, nodal-carbon-aware workload-power co-dispatch, interoperable data exchange, and verifiable grid benefits.
